Carlton & Chellington Historical Society

The Carlton & Chellington Historical Society was formed in November 1993 following the interest shown in such an organization during the preparation of the appraisal. A committee was formed and speakers to talk on various subjects of historic interest were engaged to talk to our members and visitors. The first talk took place on Thursday February 24th 1994 and was given by Angela Simco, a local Archaeologist, whose subject was " The History of Harrold Bridge".

The decision was taken to produce a quarterly newsletter which is provided free of charge to our members and initially this came out in January, April, July & October but as our membership subscriptions fall due on 1st January we changed the publication dates in 1999 to March, June, September & December so that renewal reminders could be sent out in the December issue prior to renewal.

The interest in the Society was such that by 23rd April 1994 we had enrolled our 100th member. Membership is not restricted to residents of Carlton & Chellington and we have members from a number of North Bedfordshire villages, Bedford itself, Northamptonshire, Hertfordshire and one member from Yorkshire whose ancestors came from Carlton.

If you wish to join the society then you can click here to see an application form which you can print out.
